Carlyn Poole
Carlyn Poole was born in Texas and received her B.A. and M.A. degrees in English from Texas Tech University. She did additional graduate work at Vanderbilt University and received her J.D. degree with honors from the University of North Carolina in 1979, where she was a member of Order of the Coif and managing editor of the North Carolina Law Review.
Ms. Poole's family law practice focuses on negotiation and mediation. She has long been active in family law matters in the North Carolina Bar Association, serving as a member of the Family Law Council, editor and contributor to the Family Forum, chair of the Family Law Section, chair of a legislative drafting committee, continuing legal education committee member, and as a frequent speaker and course planner for continuing legal education programs. She served as managing editor for the first edition of the North Carolina Marital Claims deskbook and has spoken at seminars on topics ranging from child custody, alimony, and business valuation to review of appellate cases.
She has served the North Carolina State Bar as vice-chair of the Continuing Legal Education Committee, chair of the North Carolina Conference of Bar Presidents, and as a member of the Family Law Specialization Committee and the Disciplinary Hearing Commission. She is a past member of the North Carolina Child Support Council and has taught as an adjunct instructor in family law at the University of North Carolina School of Law. Ms. Poole's other contributions to the bar include serving the Wake County Bar Association as president and as chair of the long range planning and professionalism committees. She has been a member of the Board of Governors of the North Carolina Bar Association and the board of East Central Community Legal Services. She was also a vice-president of the North Carolina Bar Association, chairing a task force on solo and small firm practice.
Ms. Poole has been listed in the family law section of Best Lawyers in America for eighteen years, is a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and is certified as a Family Law Specialist and as a Family Financial Mediator. In 2006 she won the Joseph Branch Professionalism Award. She is a member of Business North Carolina's "Legal Elite Hall of Fame" in family law. She is also listed in North Carolina Super Lawyers as one of the top 50 women lawyers in North Carolina.
