Divorce and Family Law

Family law is a cornerstone at Tharrington Smith. Its lasting importance in our practice reflects our passion to apply our expertise to each situation, whether it is resolved through negotiation of a separation agreement, mediation, collaborative law, arbitration or litigation through the courts.  At the heart of our family law practice is our understanding of the extraordinary personal crisis that divorce brings to spouses, children and extended family members. We bring to every client strength, knowledge, experience, and sensitivity.

Family law attorneys at Tharrington Smith are state and national leaders in the field. They regularly plan and teach courses for other family law attorneys.  Five of our lawyers are certified by the North Carolina State Bar as family law specialists and family financial mediators; three are former judges; and three have headed the statewide family law section of the North Carolina Bar Association, are fellows in the selective American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and are listed in Best Lawyers in America. Our attorneys have helped introduce family courts and divorce arbitration to North Carolina and are helping develop the concept of collaborative law for divorce in our state.
